Hydro excavation, hydrovac and hydro vac work
Hydro excavation uses controlled water to loosen soil, then high-powered vacuum recovery draws the resulting slurry into the truck. The same method is often called hydrovac, hydro vac or hydro vacuum excavation. It is suited to potholing, service exposure and trench support where the work needs a controlled excavation method around known or suspected underground assets. Plans, marks, site controls and an appropriate work method still form part of the job.
02
Match the unit to access, depth and slurry volume
The right hydro vacuum setup depends on truck access, hose distance, ground conditions, water access, excavation depth and the volume of slurry to recover. VACIT operates equipment including 2000L tight-access trucks, 5000L to 7000L short vacuum excavation units and 10000L Super Suckers for demanding work and long hose runs. VACIT reviews the site information before confirming which unit and crew fit the job.
03
Plan service exposure before water starts
Known or suspected services need useful site information before excavation starts. Send current plans, on-site marks, the number and depth of required potholes, and details of what work follows the exposure. VACIT also has electronic locating equipment with ground penetrating radar support. If locating or physical confirmation is part of the scope, identify it when requesting hydrovac services so the excavation and supporting equipment can be considered together.
04
Account for slurry and handling requirements
Hydro excavation produces a mixture of loosened ground and water that is recovered into the truck. Ground conditions, expected volume, known contamination, site hazards and the required disposal path can change the setup. Share those details rather than describing the job only as digging. VACIT will confirm whether the material and handling requirements are suitable before the truck, water and recovery approach are booked.
05
Hydro excavation across Brisbane and the Gold Coast
VACIT provides hydro excavation across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, the Sunshine Coast and wider South East Queensland. Trucks are dispatched from the public operations yard at 55 Seaview Road, Mount Cotton QLD 4165. For work in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast, include the exact site address, work window, truck position and estimated hose run so the team can assess how the mobile setup reaches the excavation area.
06
Brief hydro excavation contractors with site facts
When comparing hydro excavation contractors, give each contractor a clear site brief. For VACIT, include the required exposure, marked assets or plans, ground conditions, access, water availability, hose distance, slurry requirements, photos and the next activity on site. These details let the team assess the job against the available equipment and confirm a suitable approach without promising an outcome before the site requirements are understood.
